**🏯 Explore Ancient Temple Ruins** Ayutthaya Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the must-see temples include Wat Mahathat, famous for the Buddha head entwined in tree roots, and Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the royal temple with three iconic chedis. Admission to most temples is 50 baht each, or you can buy a combined ticket for 220 baht that covers six major sites. The park opens daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but early morning or late afternoon offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Rent a bicycle for around 50 baht per day to easily hop between the ruins. **🚲 Cycle Around the Island** The historical park is spread out, and cycling is the best way to cover ground while soaking in the scenery. Many guesthouses and shops near the park entrance rent bikes for 50 to 100 baht per day, and you can pick up a free map at the TAT office on Si Sanphet Road. A leisurely loop around the island takes about three to four hours, including stops at Wat Chaiwatthanaram and Wat Phanan Choeng. Be sure to carry water and wear sunscreen, as shade is limited between sites. **🛶 Take a Boat Tour** Seeing Ayutthaya from the water offers a different perspective on the city's layout and history. Longtail boat tours circle the island and stop at key temples like Wat Phanan Choeng and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, typically costing 500 to 800 baht per hour for a private boat that fits up to six people. You can arrange tours at the pier near the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum or through your hotel. Sunset cruises are especially popular, so book ahead during high season from November to February. **🏛️ Visit Museums and Palaces** The Chao Sam Phraya National Museum houses a superb collection of gold artifacts and bronze Buddha images unearthed from the ruins, and it's open Wednesday to Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a 150 baht entry fee. Nearby, the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal offers elephant rides, though ethical travelers may prefer to visit the elephant camp just to observe. For a taste of later history, the Bang Pa-In Royal Palace, about 20 kilometers south, features eclectic architecture and is open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM for 100 baht. **🍜 Sample Local Street Food** Ayutthaya is famous for its giant river prawns, and you'll find them grilled at riverside restaurants like Baan Mai Rim Nam and Sai Thong. For a quick and cheap meal, head to the night market on U-Thong Road, where you can try local specialties like boat noodles for 40 to 60 baht and roti sai mai for 20 baht. The market runs from around 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and it's a great spot to mingle with locals. Don't miss the chance to try traditional Thai desserts like foi thong (golden threads) and thong yip. **🚂 Getting There and Around** Ayutthaya is easily reached by train from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Station or Don Mueang, with third-class tickets costing as little as 20 baht and the journey taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. Minivans from Mo Chit Bus Terminal are faster at around 1 hour and cost about 60 baht, but they can be cramped. Once in Ayutthaya, tuk-tuks and songthaews (shared pickups) are available for short trips, with fares starting at 30 baht per person for shared rides. For flexibility, renting a motorbike for 200 to 300 baht per day is a good option if you're comfortable riding. **🌅 Catch a Sunset at Wat Chaiwatthanaram** Wat Chaiwatthanaram, located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, is arguably the most photogenic temple in Ayutthaya, especially at sunset. The temple is open until 6:00 PM, and the 50 baht entry fee is well worth it for the views. Arrive around 5:00 PM to secure a good spot and watch the sky turn orange behind the central prang. You can also take a short boat ride across the river from the main island for a few baht. **🎉 Join a Festival or Event** If your visit coincides with the Ayutthaya World Heritage Fair in December, you're in for a treat: the ruins are illuminated at night, and there are cultural performances, food stalls, and a sound-and-light show. Another highlight is the Songkran Festival in April, when locals celebrate the Thai New Year with water fights and merit-making at temples. Check the TAT website for exact dates, as they vary slightly each year. These events offer a deeper insight into Thai culture and are family-friendly.
