**🍜 Must-Try Local Dishes** Ayutthaya is famous for its river prawns, which are grilled over charcoal and served with a spicy seafood dipping sauce. Another signature dish is roti sai mai, a sweet cotton candy wrapped in a thin pancake, often sold near the ancient ruins. You should also try kuay teow ruea, or boat noodles, a rich and aromatic noodle soup that originated in the region. These dishes reflect the city's culinary heritage and are widely available at street stalls and markets. **🦐 Best River Prawn Spots** For the freshest river prawns, head to Baan Mai Rim Nam, located at 6 Moo 4, U-Thong Road, near the Chao Phraya River. A large grilled prawn plate costs around 500 to 800 baht, depending on size, and the restaurant is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Another popular choice is Ruen Mai, at 12/1 Moo 4, Tambon Pratuchai, which offers river prawns at similar prices and has a lovely riverside setting. Both places get busy on weekends, so reservations are recommended. **🍢 Street Food Stalls** The night market on Naresuan Road, near the Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre, is a great spot for street food. You can find grilled squid, meatballs, and pad Thai for around 30 to 60 baht per plate. The market operates from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM daily, and it's a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Another option is the Chao Phrom Market, open from morning until early evening, where you can sample local snacks like sai mai and coconut ice cream. **🍛 Local Restaurants** For a sit-down meal, try Saithong River Bistro at 45 Moo 1, U-Thong Road, which serves traditional Thai dishes like green curry and tom yum goong. Main courses range from 80 to 200 baht, and the restaurant is open from 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM. Another reliable spot is Phae Krung Kao, at 5 Moo 4, U-Thong Road, known for its authentic Thai flavors and friendly service. Both restaurants offer air-conditioned seating and are popular with families. **🍰 Sweet Treats and Desserts** Roti sai mai is Ayutthaya's most iconic dessert, and you can find it at many stalls around the city, especially near Wat Mahathat. A pack typically costs 20 to 40 baht, and it's best enjoyed fresh. For a cooler treat, try coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell, available at the Ayutthaya Night Market for about 30 baht. These sweets are perfect for a hot day of temple hopping. **☕ Cafes and Coffee Shops** Ayutthaya has a growing cafe scene, with spots like The Summer House, located at 88 Moo 4, Rojana Road, offering a cozy atmosphere and a range of coffee drinks. A latte costs around 60 to 80 baht, and the cafe is open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Another favorite is Baan Khao Mao, at 12/3 Moo 2, Bang Ian Road, which serves traditional Thai coffee and light meals. These cafes are great for a break between sightseeing. **🌙 Evening Food Markets** The Ayutthaya Night Market, located on Naresuan Road, comes alive after 5:00 PM with dozens of food stalls. You can enjoy grilled seafood, som tam, and various noodle dishes for under 100 baht. The market is easily accessible by tuk-tuk from the historical park, with fares around 50 to 100 baht. It's a lively place to experience local nightlife and cuisine. **💡 Tips for Food Explorers** When eating street food, look for stalls with high turnover to ensure freshness. Most vendors accept cash only, so carry small bills and coins. If you have dietary restrictions, learn a few Thai phrases like 'mai sai phong churot' (no MSG) or 'mai phet' (not spicy). Tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill is appreciated.
