**🍜 Must-Try Northern Dishes** Chiang Mai's signature dish is khao soi, a rich coconut curry noodle soup topped with crispy egg noodles, served with pickled mustard greens and lime. You'll find it everywhere from street stalls to upscale restaurants, typically priced between 50 and 120 baht. Another local favorite is sai ua, a spicy pork sausage flavored with herbs and grilled over charcoal, often sold at markets for around 20 baht per skewer. Don't miss nam prik ong, a mild tomato and pork dip served with fresh vegetables and sticky rice, a staple of Northern Thai cuisine. **🏮 Old City Food Stalls** The Old City is packed with street food, especially around the Sunday Walking Street Market on Ratchadamnoen Road, which runs from Tha Phae Gate to Ratchawithi Road every Sunday from 4 PM to midnight. Here you can graze on everything from mango sticky rice (40 baht) to grilled squid (80 baht). For a quieter scene, head to Chang Phueak Gate on the north side of the moat, where vendors sell khao soi and grilled chicken from late afternoon until around 10 PM. Prices are generally 30 to 60 baht per dish. **🍽️ Riverside Fine Dining** For a splurge, try The Riverside Bar & Restaurant at 9-11 Charoenrat Road, which offers Thai and international dishes with live music nightly from 7 PM. Expect to pay around 200 to 400 baht per main course. Another standout is David's Kitchen, located at 113 Bumruang Rajd Road, known for its innovative Thai fusion tasting menus starting at 1,200 baht. Both spots are popular, so reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. **🥘 Local Markets to Explore** Talat Warorot (Warorot Market) on Chang Moi Road is a great place to sample Northern Thai snacks like moo ping (grilled pork skewers) and kanom jeen (fermented rice noodles) for under 50 baht. The market opens daily from around 6 AM to 6 PM. For a more modern take, visit the One Nimman market on Nimmanhaemin Road, which hosts food stalls from 4 PM to 10 PM daily, offering everything from Thai street food to international bites. Don't forget to try the coconut ice cream at Warorot for about 30 baht. **☕ Cafes and Coffee Culture** Chiang Mai's coffee scene is thriving, with trendy cafes clustered around Nimmanhaemin Road and the Old City. Ristr8to Lab at 15/3 Nimmanhaemin Road is famous for its latte art and single-origin brews, with prices from 80 to 150 baht. Graph Cafe at 25/1 Ratvithi Road offers creative coffee concoctions in a cozy setting, open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. For a quiet workspace, Akha Ama Coffee at 9/1 Mata Apartment, Hussadhisewee Road, supports local hill tribes and serves excellent pour-overs. **🍢 Night Bazaar Eats** The Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road comes alive after 6 PM, with food stalls lining the sidewalks and inside the Ploen Ruedee Night Market. You can feast on seafood platters for around 300 baht or grab a plate of pad Thai for 60 baht. Ploen Ruedee also hosts live music and has plenty of seating, making it a great spot to linger. The market runs nightly until around midnight, and it's an easy walk from the Old City's east gate. **🍛 Vegetarian and Vegan Options** Chiang Mai is very vegetarian-friendly, with dedicated restaurants like Anchan Vegetarian at 1/4 Nimmanhaemin Road, which serves creative Thai dishes without meat, with mains from 100 to 180 baht. For a budget option, try the vegetarian stalls at the Sunday Walking Street Market, where you can find veggie pad Thai and spring rolls for 40 to 60 baht. Many traditional Thai dishes can be made vegetarian upon request, but always confirm that fish sauce and shrimp paste are omitted. **💰 Budget and Payment Tips** Street food in Chiang Mai is incredibly affordable, with most dishes costing between 30 and 80 baht. Sit-down restaurants in the Old City or Nimman typically charge 100 to 250 baht per dish. Bring cash, as many street vendors and smaller restaurants do not accept credit cards. ATMs are widely available, but they charge a 220 baht withdrawal fee, so it's best to take out larger amounts at once.
