**🗺️ Getting Oriented** Chiang Rai is compact, with most sights clustered in the city center or a short songthaew ride away. The city sits in northern Thailand, about 3 hours by bus from Chiang Mai, and the main bus terminal is on Phaholyothin Road. Use the Grab app or negotiate with songthaew drivers for trips; expect to pay 30-60 baht for short hops within the city. Renting a scooter (200-300 baht per day) gives you the most flexibility for day trips. **🛕 Day 1: City Temples** Start at Wat Phra Kaew (open 7 AM to 6 PM, free entry) on Trairat Road, home of the original Emerald Buddha. Then walk 10 minutes to Wat Phra Singh, a smaller but serene temple with a classic Lanna-style chedi. For lunch, try the local favorite Khao Soi Phor Jai on Sankhongnoi Road, where a bowl costs around 50 baht. In the afternoon, visit the Hilltribe Museum (entry 50 baht, open 8:30 AM to 5 PM) on Prachasongkhro Road to learn about the region's ethnic groups. **🌙 Day 1 Evening** Head to the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar (open daily from 6 PM to 11 PM) near the bus terminal. Grab a plate of grilled squid or sai ua (northern Thai sausage) for around 40-60 baht. The bazaar also has a small food court with seating and live music some nights. After dinner, walk 5 minutes to the Clock Tower, which lights up in a colorful LED show at 7 PM, 8 PM, and 9 PM. **🏞️ Day 2: White Temple** Take a songthaew from the old bus station on Phaholyothin Road to Wat Rong Khun (White Temple), about 30 minutes south of the city; the fare is around 20-30 baht. Entry to the temple costs 100 baht and it opens at 8 AM. Spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the intricate white sculptures and the famous bridge of 'rebirth.' On the way back, stop at the Black House (Baan Dam), a 20-minute ride from the White Temple, with entry also 80 baht. Both sites are best visited in the morning before tour buses arrive. **🍜 Day 2 Lunch & Afternoon** For lunch, try the riverside restaurant Lung Eed on the Kok River, known for its spicy northern Thai dishes like gaeng hang lay (Burmese-style pork curry) for around 80-120 baht. After lunch, visit the Oub Kham Museum (entry 100 baht, open 9 AM to 5 PM) on Nakhon Sawan Road, which houses a private collection of Lanna and Tai artifacts. If you have energy left, rent a bicycle (50 baht per day) and ride along the Kok River to the Chiang Rai Beach area, about 4 km from the center. **☕ Day 3: Mae Fah Luang** Rent a scooter or hire a songthaew for the day (around 800-1000 baht) to visit Doi Tung and Mae Fah Luang Garden, about an hour's drive north of Chiang Rai. The garden entry is 90 baht, and the nearby Doi Tung Royal Villa costs 90 baht. The drive up offers panoramic views of the mountains and hill tribe villages. Stop at the Doi Tung Market for local coffee and snacks; a bag of fresh coffee beans costs around 150 baht. **🛍️ Day 3 Evening** Return to Chiang Rai by late afternoon and head to the Saturday Walking Street (if your visit falls on a Saturday) on Thanalai Road, which runs from 4 PM to 10 PM. Otherwise, the Night Bazaar is open daily. Pick up souvenirs like handmade textiles or silver jewelry; prices are often negotiable. For a final dinner, try the popular restaurant Chivit Thamma Da on the Kok River, with mains around 150-250 baht, open until 10 PM. **🚌 Transport Tips** Songthaews (shared trucks) are the main public transport in Chiang Rai; flag one down and tell the driver your destination, and pay when you get off. Fares within the city are 20-40 baht, while trips to the White Temple or Black House cost 30-60 baht. Grab is available but can be limited in outer areas, so plan ahead. For day trips, hiring a private driver for 800-1200 baht per day is convenient and allows you to cover more ground.
